Floor-to-ceiling oak library

The clients wanted a real library — not a wall of decorative books, but a working room where every shelf is reachable and the spine of every book is visible. The room is 4.2 m wide and 3.1 m tall, which is enough that a fixed ladder is unsafe and a rolling library ladder is the right answer.

The shelves are 30 mm solid oak with hidden steel reinforcement strips routed into the underside. Books are heavy. A 1 m oak shelf without reinforcement sags 6 mm over a decade under a full load of hardcovers — adding the steel strip drops that to under 1 mm.

The ladder runs on a brass rail along the top edge. The rail is two pieces joined with an invisible scarf at the centre — a single 4.2 m brass extrusion would have been impractical to ship and align. Each ladder wheel has a soft polyurethane tyre so the ladder rolls quietly.

The finish is hardwax oil only. Lacquer would have looked plasticky next to the brass, and oil ages with the room — twenty years from now the bottom shelves will be slightly darker than the top ones, which is exactly the point.
